THE FUTURE OF CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
In recent years there has been great debate, analysis and reflection about corporate social responsibility, CSR, in Spain. On the one hand, numerous events, workshops, courses and forums have been organised to develop it, and on the other, large corporations have worked toward and dedicated themselves to actions to "communicate" their CSR, acting as locomotive companies, and as "models" of application and communication.
Nevertheless, "not all that glitters is gold" in the realm of CSR, nor is what is communicated in this regard by the companies necessarily reliable. Numerous examples of large companies whose behaviour fluctuates in a very thin line depending on the country in which it operates, what we call the "ping pong line," or that act in areas such as the environment, and appear as committed companies (in the upper part of the line), but which impede access to new competitors, or have unclear client billing practices (on the part below the line).
The future of CSR does not lie with this type of companies, but rather with the SMEs, fundamentally because there are MANY MORE, according to INE data, more than 99% of Spanish companies are small and medium enterprises. They are the ones that consolidate the territory, the ones that create employment and the ones that contribute more to the GDP. Therefore, how can we talk about CSR and its future without talking about integrating it into SMEs?
